I can toss. Can you smash? What a splat! A Pie Research Project is a public learning lab where Duguid and Olsen will test pieing. By setting up a systematic pie experiment, they intend to discover what pies are best for which situations and how the structure of pie and the movements of the pie-er and pie-ee create meaning.

Although the cream pie seems to be the favorite of pieing moments, is it really the most effective comedy instrument? Or is it the best for black and white film where pieing had its media heyday.

• Is an apple pie better than a cream pie at close range?

• Is a graham cracker crust funnier than a standard crust?

• Is there a time when a two-crust pies ability to hold together important to the way the pie-er pies?

• When tossed does a pumpkin pie out splat a cherry?

To satisfy these questions Duguid and Olsen have created a list of pie actions and another list of pie types. The audience is invited to watch and help the pair perform each action with each pie type to fulfill this quest.
