Meg Duguid and Catie Olson’s held an art moving parade. On April 30th Duguid and Olson moved Meg’s art collection from her old apartment to her new apartment that is located just three blocks away. For this process they used cardboard, tape, a dolly, a little red wagon, manpower, a map, BLACK STILETTOS, and properly garnished pizza.

Duguid and Olson’s two- person parade of packaged art works followed a route from 2846 West 21st street, to 2226 South Marshall Blvd. Each group of works mimicked a lone post-modern parade float of carefully curated boxes that were pushed, pulled, and carried by the high-heeled clad duo. The works transported ranged from small to large, weighing form under a pound to a 250 pound bronze work. Artist work in the move include Andrew Natale, Frank Pollard, Amanda Ross-Ho, Bobby Burg, Siebren Versteeg, Jessica Peterson, Diego Bobby, Jack Sloss, Erik Brown, Stanlyn Breve, Terra Fuller, Iain Muirhead, Elisa Lendvay, Mike Wolf, Dominique Rey, and Brian Taylor.

Utilizing their mapped route Duguid and Olson created and eatable map created from a rectangular cheese pizza with pepperoni dots representing the trail they took on the with artwork parade. Duguid and Olson then kicked off their BLACK STILETTOS, eat the pizza map, and drink beer as a time honored tradition of moving.

Untitled (Carnival)
A Statement written by Michael Thomas

Splayed on its back, a defenseless clown. Its guts facing the sky for all to see, this is, Untitled (Carnival). Duguid and Olson's latest in an ongoing collaboration exploring the edifice of comedy through prop, and antics. Pilfering methods handed down from Keaton, through Ball, then on to Burnett, there is this notion that comedy lives inside its bits and pieces. Duguid and Olson dig in, removing those lusty signifiers; the grease paint, and the shaving cream pies. Only to reassemble the remaining pieces-parts as a wonderfully original portmanteau, complete with verve and panache.

Here, they embrace space not as a constant but as a network of loosely tethered events and objects that demand immediacy. Making Untitled (Carnival), more of a meal with many colors than a practical guide to art as determinism. Our entree being, simultaneity served with suspension of action therein. They invite us to a tapas serving punchlines, zingers, and spoonerisms that encourage flights of reason and speculation without succumbing to the allure of their profundity as decadent nibbles.

This work, like its predecessors, the gag, the skit, and the routine, are all cobbled from ruthless calculations flirting with the banal. This certainly isn't the addled ravings of Johnny Cum Surrealist. Nor is it a dream landscape of hyper-sexual longing. Its also not self gratification served to you in a pint-sized mug for two bits, and a kick in the ass. Sure, Duguid and Olson revel in their rapport of coercion and sedition like gleaming twins beneath blue bonnets. But they're only re-imagining their copious reservoir of experiences, assembling the tools necessary to convey the brevity of something poignant and shared. In short, the tools of comedy appropriated for the purpose of aesthetic revelation, quantum insight, and RED HIGH HEELS.

"Pie Art" -- Finger Pie Fight

For the Last Supper in Fall, 2009, we created a pie sculpture mailed from Chicago to NYC. This sculpture work, entitled Pie Art, is our take on pie and high art. Essentially we created a larger-than life-sized sculptural lemon meringue pie that has a slice cut out of it. This pie sculpture is two and a half times larger in scale than an average sized pie, and perhaps two and a half times tastier (?). The diameter of the pie is 24” across. In the place where the slice would have been is our two-person exhibition, white walls, a wood floor and clip lighting—our “Slice of Gallery” so to speak. In our Pie Gallery, Meg and Catie showed the remains of a finger pie fight inside the mini "Slice of Gallery". Small banana cream pies lay next to cherry pies as well as chocolate cream remnants with graham cracker crumbs and their pie tins. The mini pies were about the size of a quarter, but still held up in the finger pie fight. Next to the Pie Art space we displayed the cut out piece of lemon meringue pie on a small white plate. The slice allowed the viewer to see the internal pie layers since the cut out slice portion has “white pie cube” walls. The pie sat upon the mailing box/ box (approximately 50lbs.) smartly "serving" as its pedestal.

Largest Mud Pie

So our plot to make the World's Largest Mud Pie has been foiled.

In a last minute decision, Deitch Projects has decided that they cannot get us water to create the amount of mud we need. This is about 20 to 30 gallons of water or about 5 minutes with a hose. As we have been spending all our time and resources on the actual tin, this is a big issue for us. Especially since we don’t own a car and we were going to walk the component parts of the piece from Brooklyn to the parade site. We can't roll 30 gallons of water across the Williamsburg Bridge on top of the tin and large pie implements. We also think that buying purified water on site is not only expensive, but a waste.

Deitch has also let us know that we can't dispose of our mud pie after the parade. This might also be an issue, as once the piece has been put together and the trash added, how are we going to an 8' round mud pie back to Brooklyn to get rid of it?

Oh and did we mention that it's only 2 weeks before the parade when we got this information.

Never fear we have a back up plan:

Handing Out Mud Pies

For the Art Parade we would like to make mud pies from the trash everyone else leaves behind. Essentially we want to be last in the lineup and act as the cleanup women following the parade--one of us pulling a red wagon filled with dirt and pie tins and one of us carrying a broom and dust pan. As we go along the parade route, we will be sweeping up the trash that came from projects before us and mixing it into a mud pie that is to be handed to viewers along the route. Each pie will come complete with a written notice to the viewers stating that they have been pied.

We still have a proposal in to Guinness, but as they take so long to get back to us, perhaps that piece is for a different time. We understand the constraints placed on your staff for this parade and we think the above proposal might be easier on everyone. The large pie implements, and our outfits will still stay the same.

Sadly this piece too came to a watery end. We are not allowed to hand things out to the audience, so this one is out.

Were a little concerned as now it's a week and a half until the parade.

But we have yet another plan:

Pie Implements

Catie and Erik (her husband) have bought their plane tickets to New York for the Parade.

We have our outfits and some of our giant implements.

We are working on how to construct a giant pie tin.

The Price of metal is high so it would cost $3600 to have an 8' fabricated out of steel, so we are thinking perhaps plastic or wood.

We think that we will actually wheel the carts of materials to make our piece from my house in Bushwick over the Williamsburgh bridge to the parade site. There we can put the piece together, do our make-up at Saphora, and buy dirt for the mud portion of the pie. We are hoping for a ridiculous day.

So now it starts!

For the Art Parade we are making the World’s largest Mud Pie created from street trash and mud. We will collect trash from all of the other projects/ floats and also what parade-viewers leave behind. Coming last in the lineup, we will act as the cleanup chefs in the parade. A Pie helper will be pulling a double-wide red wagon with a giant pie tin on top, while we use large-scale cooking utensils to sweep up the trash that came from projects before us and then mixing it into a the worlds largest mud pie. This pie has been submitted to the Guinness book of world records for the title of World’s largest Mud Pie created from street trash. We are awaiting Guinness’ response, but have been made aware that it could take up to 6 months to set up the arrangements. We see this as a practice event leading up to the title. At the end of the parade the pie is to be weighed and measured.

Next week, we will be assigning you someone from the Art Parade Team to be your point person. He/she will be the ones to follow up with you and can help with any questions you might have.

For those of you who are based in New York, I wanted to inform you that we have a relationship with Materials for the Arts, an organization that manages a warehouse of materials that can be used for artists projects. By early next week, you can call them to make an appointment to visit their warehouse in Long Island City, Queens. They may ask for you to write thank you letters to various donors that supply their warehouse with goods. Please treat this request seriously, as not doing this might jeopardize our chances of working with them in the future. Please also stick to your appointments once they have been made. HQ Gallery and independent curator Alison Beth Levy invite you to a jovial event of science-bent interactive art installations and performances. The show features artists whose hypotheses are infused with levity: the Eh Team, Cassie Thornton, Egnekn, Minister of Lamination, Meg Duguid, Catie Olson, and Sister Mary Manhattan the Astrologer. Together, they will create a fun and enlightening environment as a reprieve from the mid-summer Brooklyn heat. The event will take place in the Joymore Sculpture Garden located in the back courtyard of HQ.

Egnekn, Minister of Lamination, will be performing his metaphysical sound ritual with flat objects brought to him by the public. Canadian HQ founders, the Eh Team, will collaborate with "Against Maps" artist Cassie Thornton to create a sprawling hydraulic installation called The Backyard Purification System (BPS) . Mimicking a natural water table the BPS will process and regenerate tap water to support an isolated biosphere.

Their will also be two live comedic performances starting at 8pm. Hot from their recent weekend performance at Central Park, where they tested the humorous properties of the sponginess of meringue , duo Meg Duguid and Catie Olson will perform Piograms, a single pie-component balancing act. Expect a sugar rush from their deconstruction of pie. Afterwards, you can bring your problems and sins to sassy Sister Mary Manhattan the Astrologer, who will demonstrate the wisdom of the Great Illusion.

Here is the recipe Meg & I are going to use to build our house of pie ingredients. This recipe was found in Saveur magazine.

We will make these pies after we've constructed our deck of pie ingredients; the original building plans will be altered just slightly--- a visual example of the pie tower is in the works

FAVORITES

Ginger Peach Pie

SERVES 8

Making this pie with sweet, ripe peaches allowed us to use less sugar; you may need to adjust the amount of sugar, depending on the sweetness of your peaches.

FOR THE CRUST:
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
8 tbsp. chilled butter, cut into pieces
3 tbsp. chilled vegetable shortening
1 egg
1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

FOR THE FILLING:
1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup candied ginger diced
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
2/3 cup plus 1 tbsp. sugar
1/4 cup instant tapioca
4 lbs. fresh peaches
2 tbsp. butter
1 egg white

1. Sift flour and salt into a medium bowl. Rub butter and shortening into flour mixture with your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs. Whisk egg and lemon juice together in a small bowl, then sprinkle into flour mixture with 3–4 tbsp. ice water. Mix until dough just begins to hold together. Wrap; refrigerate 1 hour.

2. Combine lemon juice, ginger, cinnamon, 2/3 cup sugar, and tapioca in a large bowl. Blanch peaches in a pot of boiling water for 15 seconds, then cool in a bowl of cold water. Peel, cut into thick slices, and toss in lemon juice mixture.

3. Preheat oven to 375°. Divide dough in half. Roll into two 12" circles on a floured surface. Line a 9" pie pan with one circle; add peach filling. Drape remaining circle on top, crimp edges, and slash top. Brush with egg white, and sprinkle with remaining sugar. Bake until golden, about 1 hour. Serve warm.

1. go shopping for ingredients to make 2 ginger peach pies

fresh peaches (about 12)
crystallized ginger
sugar
flour - enough to make 4 crusts total
shortening/butter
2 pie tins
2 forks (you may forks you already own)
measuring cups and bowl
oven (hot)

so before you actually make 2 peach pies a sculptured deck of pie ingredients should be constructed, then after the sculpture is built, tear it apart and prepare 2 peach pies

bottom layer --- sprinkle sugar on table (specific amount TBA)
place about 6 whole peaches in sugar and place 1 pie tin on top of whole peaches --tin is bottom side up

slice remaining six peaches and arrange on top of pie tin

place next pie tin bottom side down on top of sliced peaches

put flour (specific amount TBA), water (amount TBA) and shortening/butter (amount TBA) in the pie tin

place two forks in water, flour, shortening mixture-- maybe find a next chunk of shortening to stick fork in -- put some of the candied ginger in the prongs of the fork

once the sculpture is built, destruct sculpture and make two ginger peach pies (top and bottom crusts for both)

Dress..... Check.

Meg & Catie successfully completed "Split, Splat, Splot" in central park over the weekend. They made new friends, threw a few pies around, dragged a new digital projector fully wrapped & packaged through central park just because & even came up with future ideas for work. Clothing, they both discovered, especially when wearing the same dress, makes people think you are related- like "sisters" or even "twins". We were noticed certainly. Add a cart filled with a bucket, a shovel, a broom, and pies stacked in crates... we became a cleaning crew that worked for the park... who'd da thunk?? We are certainly tired. Catie even woke up from a dream today; she had a dream that she was being pied.

For Duguid and Olson’s finale the have created a two-woman public slapstick dance piece based on the idea of synchronized swimming. This choreographed routine breaks down the motion of pieing into a poetic comedyesque dance. As they go between one pieing type to another, the layers of sugar will pile up on Duguid and Olson followed by the pair donning cleaning uniforms spilling buckets of water on the pie area and each other for cleaning.

At whole foods they find an expensive organic cherry pie—Catie pays

They eat breakfast and change

12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. daily, with a grand finale on Sunday July 22 at 7:00 p.m.

Split, Splat, Splot is a series of synchronized pieing events taking place throughout Central Park. During the three day span, Duguid and Olson have synchronized their watches and will be performing nine classic pieing actions in various park locations directly on the hours of 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. daily, culminating with a grand two-woman synchronized pie routine on Sunday July 22 at 7 p.m. (see schedule and map on the following pages for a further description).

In advance of these events, Duguid and Olson set up a public learning pie lab, called I can toss. Can you smash? What a splat! A Pie Research Project, to determine which pies they will be performing which actions with.

I can toss. Can you smash? What a splat! A Pie Research Project was a public learning lab where Duguid and Olson tested pieing in April. By setting up a systematic pie experiment, they discovered what pies are best for which situations and how the structure of pie and the movements of the pie-er and pie-ee create meaning.

Although the cream pie seems to be the favorite of pieing moments, was it the most effective comedy instrument? Or is it the best for black and white film where pieing had its media heyday? To satisfy these questions, Duguid and Olson created a list of pie actions and another list of pie types and performed each action with each pie type to fulfill this quest.

After an extreme evening of scientifically lobbing a total of sixty pies at each other, Duguid an Olson came to a number of conclusions, including that cream pie is does not hold up as well as a double-crusted pie in a long-range throwing situation—and that sometimes the sponginess of meringue is funnier than the splatyness of cream.

Come join Duguid and Olson with guest appearances by Jeff DeSalvo, and Jon Marco in Central Park when these results will be put to the test.

Synchronized Pieing--on the Hour
July 20-22, 2007, 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. daily

Each morning Duguid and Olson will be waking up with the roosters to synchronize their watches and bake that day’s pies. During the three-day span Duguid and Olson will be performing 9 classic pieing actions in various park locations directly on the hours of 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. daily. Every evening they will be found at Duguid’s local laundry mat cleaning their outfits from that day.

1. Sitting on pie will be performed with a Lemon Meringue pie: Olson will set a pie on bench to read the paper. Duguid not noticing the pie will sit directly on it.

2. Running with pie will be enacted with a blueberry pie. Duguid will come at Olson with a running start and pie her at close range.

3. Duguid and Olson will hail a Carriage or Rickshaw on 60th St & 5th Ave. Sometime after they are picked up Olson will hit Duguid at arms length with a chocolate cream pie and perform a close-range pieing.

A Night at the Races is a one-evening pie race event, which utilizes slapstick symbology navigating a series of tracks like roman chariots to explore the collision of craft, performance, reality, and cartoon through the literal collision of piecar into piecar.

Go fast, turn left, and don’t crash!

For this event Duguid and Olson have created two remote control pie-racers that the audience can use to compete with on a two-dimensional track. These piecars are literally remote control cars of which the bodies have been replace by pie tins creating a pie on wheels that will race on a hand drawn track. In heats of two racers at a time the pie-racing talent will be weeded out of the audience. As the evening progresses the courses will be altered to increase in difficulty until a pie-race champion is named. There will be a special prize for the victor.

Laugh Seriously is a collaborative show based on a weird tracking of subject and object within a fictional world of serious laughter. Duguid and Olson have excavated their gray matter and come up with a spine-tingling exhibition. The audience is invited to literally step directly into this duo’s work that features a laughing-gas chamber and an oxygen chamber, a homemade clown car, a joke wall, a chess game, and a map of what it all means.

While trying to fulfill the comedic rolls of the “straight man” and the “crack up” this team has created a serious of work that explores leisure, joke, and concentration. The opening itself will be a riot with a myriad of performances including a hundred yard dash. Please dress accordingly and bring proper identification

This exhibition ran from June 24-July 15, 2006. Although the exhibition has closed, it’s not over yet.

During the run of this exhibition multiple works were purposely damaged by unknown parties. Since July 1st, their zeal in rallying against Meg and Catie and their work, with its casual appearance and mercurial substance has resulted in the vandalizing of 6 pieces, on separate occasions, over the course of 2 and a half weeks time. As the Butcher Shop mostly houses studios in it’s two-floor space, it is most likely that this was an artist on artist crime. After much conversation as to what created such offense in another artists mind, Duguid, Olsen, and the Butcher Shop Dogmatic gallery could only come up with one response:

Reconstructing, pineapple leaves, deconstruction, bench press, destruction, matadors, mischief, fire, what ever, OK!

This descriptive word association was uttered by Duguid and Olsen, in conjunction with the Butcher Shop Dogmatic gallery, as title for a performance to directly deal with these impish and quizzical actions.

Unable to document the exhibition before the pieces were damaged, the artists will reconstruct the exhibition and shoot slides. After the exhibition has been reconstructed they will then reinstall the show to highlight the damaged works, as well as recreate the Map of what it all means in the image of the new space. The gallery will then be reopened for one evening on the 29th of August. That evening you are invited to bring to the Butcher Shop a piece of artwork to be destroyed, as a physical response to the questions raised when so much work is damaged.

A Note about the exhibition:
Laugh Seriously was a collaborative exhibition based on a weird tracking of subject and object within a fictional world of serious laughter. Characterized by an iterative structure and favoring modulating events to idol speculation, Meg Duguid and Catie Olson’s program navigated a space wherein process was investigated as an experiential device. At its core, Serious Laughter employed humor and absurdity as mediums with which contemporary aesthetic could be analyzed and its fraying bits snipped at the pleasure of a passerby’s joke

Dogmatic maintains and upholds its belief that art is not something accessible only to the few. It is instead a potential for all people everywhere to engage the notion of sensation and challenge the experience of history with anything they choose to make a tool of in any space they so choose. Dogmatic in short, will continue to provide leadership for these endeavors as more and more duck, duck, goose becomes a reasonable way to ring around the rosy. We will continue providing Art in any way possible to a world of grown ups that realize the importance of such experiences and we will do this from Chicago where Art happens in real time daily.
